Why Your Hair Won't Hold a Style (and How to Make It Last)

Quick answer

Hair sets in the shape it dries in, so a style that was dried flat won't stay up, whatever you put on top. Humidity, your scalp's natural oils and too much product all pull it down over the day. Sea Salt Spray on damp hair, a blow-dry in the shape you want, then a little Matte Clay gives it the best chance to last.

ROVANE guide card explaining why hair won't hold a style: three reasons, the fix with Sea Salt Spray on damp hair, a blow-dry and Matte Clay on dry hair, and one common mistake.

Why it happens

Most of the time it isn't your hair being difficult. It's how it was set, and what happens to it after.

  1. It dried in the wrong shape. Water loosens the bonds that hold your hair's shape, and drying sets them again. If you let it dry flat and then try to push it up with product, it keeps wanting to go back to where it dried.
  2. The air loosens it. Humidity slowly loosens a style through the day. Hair that was only half set gives up first.
  3. Weight builds up. Your scalp's natural oils travel down the hair during the day and add weight. Heavy product does the same, and fine hair feels it most.
  4. Product is doing all the work. Product supports a shape. It can't create one on its own, and it can't fix a haircut that isn't built for the style.

How to make it hold

This is the routine I use when someone needs more hold. Set the shape while drying, then lock it in.

  1. Spray first. Damp Towel-dry, then 4-6 sprays of Sea Salt Spray through damp hair for grip and body. Longer or thicker hair may need a few more.
  2. Dry it into shape. Damp to dry Blow-dry on low or medium heat, roots first, lifting them in the direction you want the style to sit. Keep the dryer moving and finish with a cool shot to set it.
  3. Finish with clay. Dry Warm a pea-sized amount of Matte Clay between your palms until it's almost invisible, then work it in back to front.

Fine hair? Start with 2-3 light shakes of Texture Powder at the dry roots, section by section. If you need more hold, add a small amount of clay on top.

Thick hair? Blow-dry it the direction it should sit, then clay back to front. That's where the control comes from.

Common mistake

Adding more product at lunch when it starts to drop.

Fix: More product on top adds weight and flattens it faster. Get the base right in the morning: spray on damp hair, dry it in shape, then a little clay.
